Ever wondered: how long does a DMT trip last? Well, as you can probably imagine, trips are like snowflakes – ever so different, and evanescent. This is also the case of the DMT trip (more like DMTrip, huh?), for some it will be a short and intense experience, and for others it will be a prolonged stream of consciousness. So, how about we try to lay out some facts, and hopefully time periods, too?
DMT, also known as N, N-Dimethyltryptamine, is a source of many fun and/or even profound trips. It usually takes the form of white or crystalline powder, but can also come as leaves. It’s an endogenous hallucinogen (found in plants) that results in hallucinations, altered time-perception, and feelings of connectedness. And how long does a DMT trip last?
TL;DR
- A DMT trip lasts around half an hour 😸
- It usually kicks in within 30 seconds 😸
- If you’re taking DMT in the form of Ayahuasca, then the trip will last several hours 🙀
How Long Does a DMT Trip Last
Time to answer the big question: exactly how long does a DMT trip last? Well, it’s a little complicated. You see, a lot of people report DMT to last around 45 minutes. It’s a piece of information you will see on many websites. But, it is no more than an estimate, and as we know, with drugs we sometimes have to nudge things a little bit.
When it comes to N dimethyltryptamine (how official), the best and most frequently reported time estimate is around half an hour. It is true that some will feel the effects longer, or shorter. However, the “longer” duration might be you feeling the comedown effects. Some people don’t consider that tripping anymore, as they are more connected to the sober reality than to the trip.
When You Smoke DMT
The way you use DMT doesn’t matter in terms of duration. DMT taken orally, smoked, vaped (Changa), or injected, lasts a bit more over than 30 minutes.
When You Use Ayahuasca
DMT is also used in the form of Ayahuasca. It is a more “natural” approach, and the brew uses a few different plants and seeds. That’s why it’s stronger (in the sense that it lasts longer). So, a dosage of such brew results in a potentially long trip – even up to 12 hours!
Editor’s Note ✨
I would like to take a moment to remind you that Ayahuasca is a ceremonial and shamanic process. It was never meant to be consumed just for a fun trip. Therefore, it also differs a lot from a regular DMT trip.
The Effects of DMT and Time Perception
Some people think the trip lasts longer than 40 minutes due to time alteration. Hallucinogens have a strong hold on how we perceive time, and so, we may disassociate while no longer tripping and become aware of the time way later than when the trip has ended. Of course, it doesn’t apply to everybody, but it’s good to keep in mind that we aren’t very time-accurate while tripping.
How Long Do Comedown Effects Last?
That simply depends on each individual. Even stuff like mental health problems can influence the duration of the comedown.
In general, comedown is the feeling of being pulled back into sobriety. It can either focus on the “come” or on the “down,” and as we well know, time drags on and on when we feel down. So, the effects of a comedown can last anywhere between 10–15 minutes.
What Can Influence How Long the Trip Will Last?
Now, we know that some of you will think that an increased amount of DMT can prolong the trip. And to some extent, it’s true. If we take only a little, we won’t feel much for long (if anything at all). It does not necessarily work the other way, though. Sure, the DMT effects may last a bit longer, but most probably, the experience will be just intensified.
So, is there anything that can actually change how long DMT lasts us for the trips? Kinda.
We can certainly make the trip longer by drinking an Ayahuasca brew.
Drug Testing DMT and Other Psychedelics
No matter how long or short-lived your trip is, DMT does not remain long in your body. In fact, you could easily take a drug test a day later, and the results should be clear.
The thing about psychedelics is that our bodies metabolize them pretty quickly (hence how fast they take to kick in). LSD, for example, is barely detectable in blood. Magic mushrooms (psilocybin) takes just a few hours to be completely broken down. 99% of (pure, or mixed with only compatible, natural substances) hallucinogens are not detectable in saliva and hair follicle tests.
Interestingly enough, drug tests aren’t exactly hallucinogenic drug oriented. Most are designed to detect amphetamine, heroin, or THC. Hallucinogens like DMT or acid can technically be tested for, but because of their ephemeral nature, it’s quite a futile effort.
