Have you ever heard of Psilocybe hispanica? It’s a newly discovered species of psilocybin mushroom and, according to recent studies, it may be the “holy grail” of psychedelics and magic mushrooms.
Psilocybe hispanica is thought to produce stronger and longer-lasting effects than other psychedelic mushrooms, and researchers are eager to learn more about its potential for treating mental health disorders.
Psilocybe Hispanica – History of Use
Psilocybe hispanica is a fungus in the family Hymenogastraceae, genus Psilocybe, section Semilanceata. The species was first identified by Mexican mycologist Gastón Guzmán in a 2000 research.
This fungus may have been used in ancient religious practices, as the 6,000-year-old Selva Pascuala rock art shows – the oldest evidence of such usage in prehistoric Europe. A more popular Psilocybe semilanceata is similar in appearance to P. hispanica.
Psilocybe Hispanica – Habitat
Psilocybe hispanica is a European species that has only been discovered in the Pyrenees mountain range in northern Spain and southwest France, where it grows on horse dung in grass fields at elevations of 5,600 to 7,500 ft.
The species is coprophilous (dung-feeding), and its fruit bodies develop on horse dung alone or in clusters. More than 25 fruit bodies can develop from the same dung, and they may grow solitary or in clusters.
Psilocybe Hispanica – Morphology
The shape of the cap is from conical to convex, with 0.2 to 0.4 inches in diameter. The surface is quite smooth, yellowish-brown or hazelnut brown in color. The grills of the Psilocybe hispanica are adnate and brown in color with white edges.
The stem is 0.6 to 1.0 inches long and 0.02-0.04 inches thick, white or yellow in color (with blue or green shades at the base). The flesh is whitish, and it bruises blue when cut or crushed.
Psilocybe Hispanica – Hallucinogenic Effects
Spanish youngsters consume the Psilocybe hispanica recreationally for its mind-altering effects. The fungus contains hallucinogenic chemicals known as psilocybin. The potency of this species has been reported to be comparable to that of Psilocybe cubensis or higher.
Psychedelic effects include visual and auditory hallucinations, changes in perception, feelings of euphoria, and spiritual experiences. The experience can be enjoyable or challenging, depending on the mindset of the individual.
